The Champion Spirit: MNCC 2025

Every year, the Malaysia National Coffee Championship (MNCC) brings together the most talented baristas in Malaysia to compete on the national stage in Kuala Lumpur. Organised by the Malaysia Specialty Coffee Association (MSCA), MNCC 2025 continues to celebrate creativity, skill, and passion through high-stakes competitions. For 103 Coffee, a pioneer in the Malaysian specialty coffee scene since 2014, the MNCC is more than just a competition; it’s a tradition.

 

Since 2016, 103 Coffee has been a consistent force in the MSCA championships, securing six consecutive National Latte Art Championship titles between 2018 and 2024 and achieving a historic World Latte Art Championship win in Brazil. Beyond latte art, 103 Coffee has also claimed champion titles at the Malaysia Aeropress Championship 2024, the Malaysia Open Brewers Cup Championship 2025, and the MONIN Coffee Creativity Cup 2025, among several other prestigious accolades we’ve earned over the years. This legacy of success has cemented 103 Coffee’s reputation as the House of Champs; home to Malaysia’s champion baristas and a driving force in the nation’s specialty coffee industry.

From 30 July to 1 August, the MNCC 2025 took over the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), held in conjunction with the Malaysia International Food & Beverage (MIFB) Trade Fair. Representing 103 Coffee this year were Siow Chai Jing at the Malaysia Latte Art Championship (MLAC) and Jewel Ting at the Malaysia Barista Championship (MBC).

For Chai Jing, it was about transforming a blank canvas of steamed milk into intricate works of art. Competing with the theme “The Strength Within,” she poured designs inspired by animals that embodied qualities like defense, patience, power, and courage. From a Triceratops and a Bull, to a Turtle and a Tiger, she secured 3rd Runner-Up in the MLAC finals with her clean lines and symmetry. Having placed 1st Runner-Up in 2024, her journey reflects remarkable craftsmanship. What was once a daunting stage has now become a place where she performs with confidence.

For Jewel, the MBC finals were about crafting a sensory experience that blended flavour and storytelling into one seamless performance. Using beans from Panama Finca Deborah, a Geisha varietal celebrated for its delicate complexity, she presented three courses to the judges: an Espresso with juicy brightness and notes of peach, tangerine, orange blossom, and lemon tea; a Milk-based Coffee with flavours of poached peach, vanilla, and milk tea; and a Signature Beverage combining clarified yogurt, pineapple kombucha, and lacto-fermented blueberries, giving notes of papaya, bergamot, lavender, and yellow peach with a floral aftertaste. Her composure and creativity earned her 5th Runner-Up in a field of Malaysia’s top baristas. But beyond rankings, her growth was evident. Stepping onto the stage with a newfound confidence, Jewel stayed true to her craft while showing how much she has evolved as both a competitor and a storyteller.

These achievements go beyond trophies. They represent the spirit of 103 Coffee — a belief that coffee is both a craft and a journey, shaped by a champion mindset. Every competition is an opportunity to refine, learn, and bring that experience back to every cup you enjoy at 103 Coffee.
